Bus Operator ADA Compliance Tips

Customers desire safe and efficient service whenever they travel, and bus operators can provide this by having their vehicles accessible to all. They can do this by learning about the regulations the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has in place for bus companies and complying with them.

The ADA is a law that guarantees equal opportunity for people with disabilities. Public and private transportation services are among the key areas that the act assures non-discriminatory access.

What Are the ADA Regulations for Buses?

The ADA states these requirements for bus operators:

  • Charter bus companies must offer services in accessible buses to people with disabilities when given advance notice at 48 hours minimum.
  • Large fixed-route motorcoach companies must ensure that each new bus they lease or purchase for a fixed route is accessible. They must also make sure that their whole fixed route fleet has accessible buses.
  • Small bus operators offering both charter services, fixed-route services or mixed services can comply with the 48-hour minimum notice. They do not have to adhere to the fleet requirements.

ADA Compliance Tips for Bus Operators

Bus service operators should perform certain tasks when transporting people with disabilities to ensure they follow ADA guidelines. These include:

  • If the motorcoach does not have an accessible restroom, a comfort stop must be provided upon request for trips longer than three hours.
  • Bus operators should give customers information about the accessibility of the rest stops if possible.
  • Individuals using mobility devices must be allowed to get down from a motorcoach when it stops and they wish to do so.
  • Fixed route carriers should contact subsequent carriers if they provide an interline service to ensure preparations for passengers using mobility devices at transfer points.
  • People with disabilities should be charged the same fare as those without.
  • Wheelchair lifts should be cycled as part of safety inspections.
  • Ask customers with animals if they are a service animal and you are not sure about the type of tasks the animal performs.
  • Service should not be denied to customers with service animals because of a lack of identification or certification.
  • Service animals should be kept under control and with their owner at all times.
